Marine

Maritime transport is all about mass and distance.

Ocean transport is closely correlated with globalization and international trade. In the last half century, ocean transportation has grown from approximately 800 million tons to over eight billion tons per year. Maritime transportation is the most effective mode to move large quantities of cargo over long distances. While containerization also transformed the nature of shipping the majority of maritime transport involves the transport of bulk products. On a cost-per-ton basis, ocean shipping is highly efficient; however, ships and ports are extremely expensive and costly to operate.

Through Alberta’s ready access to major rail lines and extensive highway networks, Port Alberta is able to facilitate access to two of Western Canada’s most important ports: Port Metro Vancouver and the Port of Prince Rupert.

By offering Alberta businesses the opportunity to find collective solutions to individual transportation and logistics issues, our organization offers global opportunities that take advantage of the Capital Region’s rail connections to marine transportation. Port Alberta will work with port operators on Canada’s west coast to improve accessibility, efficiency and competitiveness, particularly for export market potential given the profile of resource commodities in the Alberta marketplace.
