Pipeline
Pipelines are all about flow.
Because crude oil and natural gas fields are often far from refineries and processing plants, and farther still from consumers, pipelines are necessary to transport raw materials from their source to refineries, gas processing facilities and, finally, to market. While other forms of transportation are available, pipelines provide a safe, economical and constant flow of crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products.
Approximately 97% of all oil and gas products move by pipelines in Canada, representing over three million barrels of crude oil and over 15 billion cubic feet flowing every day through Canada’s 580,000 kilometres of pipelines. This transportation network is massed largely in Alberta.
Alberta’s natural gas pipelines alone transport more than 11 billion cubic feet a day, delivering natural gas across the provincial border to the Canadian Mainline, BC System, the Foothills System and others. Connecting provincial energy production to locations as far away as the ports of Metro Vancouver and Prince Rupert, these pipelines are essential lifelines linking Alberta’s energy to the world. The Alberta Capital Region is a nexus of the Industry’s vast pipeline network linking our energy to national and international markets.
Given the essential role that energy plays in the provincial economy, Port Alberta understands the importance of ensuring the efficient flow of oil and gas through the province’s current and future pipelines. Together with Alberta’s other essential transportation modes, our organization will find efficiencies capable of making these connections even more robust.
