Roads
Road transportation is all about mobility.
As the primary link between transportation modes and the mode of choice, “first and last mile”, of virtually all supply chains, road transportation represents one of the most crucial links in an integrated transportation system. Road transportation, however, carries significant costs in both maintenance of equipment and infrastructure.
Alberta boasts a provincial highway network of approximately 31,000 kilometres servicing the businesses and industries that build economic prosperity for all Albertans. Every day, the trucking industry ships millions of dollars’ worth of Alberta goods throughout the province and North America on extensive highway networks. Several major highways, including the Yellowhead Highway, the QE II, the Trans-Canada, the Alaska Highway and the Edmonton-Fort McMurray highway, serve as major trade conduits. Road transportation is also the key to sustaining the flow of goods and material to and from Canada’s North using Edmonton as a major distribution center.
There are a wide range of companies providing road transport services, from large enterprises that operate all over North America to smaller entities serving the needs of a local community. With operators utilizing varying equipment, such as long-combination vehicles (LCVs) and half-ton trucks, the needs and opportunities for the road transportation industry are significant. As the Province of Alberta invests almost $2 billion annually in road infrastructure to support growth, the businesses that utilize the road networks must optimize for the future.
The trucking sector is focused on productivity, cost control, driver shortages, security and the environment. Port Alberta provides a platform to assist the industry through infrastructure advocacy, facilitation of cargo consolidation and a focus on efficiency and integration in our organization’s own development plans. By offering a collective voice to Alberta’s currently fragmented trucking industry, Port Alberta will make the industry more effective, more efficient and more competitive.
